Camden, Maine: A Maine Source of Luxury

Camden, Maine is a coastal retreat. This article gives an overview of what to do and where to eat and stay in Camden. It is a luxury guide to a charming destination.

Coastal Maine is the ultimate relaxing getaway. Low-key, picturesque and great for families and couples alike, the town of Camden is adjacent to Penobscot Bay. This charming destination offers plenty in the way of activities, postcard-perfect Maine greenery and luxury.

The area presents an abundance of cultural and recreational activities, with Camden’s topographical diversity facilitating watersports on lakes or the ocean, hiking in Camden Hills State Park and its 5500 acres of foliage and trails, and even skiing. Mounts Megunticook and Battie in Camden Hills State Park are beautiful climbs, affording spectacular views over Camden and the ocean. If you would rather exercise your sea legs, consider swimming, sailing or renting a canoe for a ride on Megunticook Lake. For more speed, join one of the local commercial schooners – Lazy Jack II, Surprise, Appledore II or Olad – for a day sail. Museums such as the Farnsworth are 10 to 15 minutes away in the towns of Rockport and Rockland. The modern equivalent, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, displays works by some of the locally residing artists including Alex Katz, who spends summer in nearby Lincolnville.

Shoppers will enjoy Camden’s Main Street, where stores sell clothing, foodstuffs and handmade local goods. Once a Tree is notable for woodenwares, jewelry, greeting cards and gifts, while Jo Ellen Designs sells home goods. Other cute shops include The Maine Dog, where you can pamper your pooch, and Admiral’s Buttons.

When dining, keep in mind Maine’s reputation for shellfish. Most local restaurants offer lobster rolls and other dishes featuring the crustacean. Though small, Camden boasts a number of good restaurants. Found in the Camden Harbour Inn, Natalie’s offers a high-end take on local Maine fare. Another accommodation, Hartstone Inn, is home to Chef Michael Salmon’s delicious restaurant. Other great dining options are located in nearby town Rockland, only 15 minutes by car. One is Primo, whose “farm-to-table” mandate inspired their homegrown gardens and livestock. Also in Rockland, Rustica Cucina Italiana dishes up Italian fare.

Whether searching for a romantic or family-friendly destination, Camden is the perfect spot. Just six hours from Montreal by car, the town can become your Maine retreat.
